The Final of the District Triples was played at Turramurra today, between the teams of Julie Dunn, Ngoc Hau and Louise Amos (Killara) and Elizabeth Blackwell, Jenny Palmer and Jenny Hepburn (Neutral Bay). In the semi-finals in the morning, the Killara team had defeated the St Ives team skipped by Di McBryde, and Neutral Bay defeated the Belrose team skipped by Billie Maas.
As the final got underway, it appeared that Neutral Bay’s lead Elizabeth was not in quite such sublime form as she had been in the semi’s, and the Killara girls were keeping the scoring very level right up to the halfway-point in the game (with Killara’s score bolstered by a 5 on the 7th end). on the 13th end, Elizabeth tightened her game and skip Jenny Hepburn added to the count, delivering Neutral Bay a multiple to make a mini-breakaway 14-10. But on the 14th, Killara struck back with a 3, to get the margin back to just one. After 19 ends the gap was still only two shots. Then on the 20th, working off Elizabeth’s beautiful leading skip Jenny Hepburn was able to add a third shot, setting the Killara team 5 shots to make on the final end just to send the game into an “extra end”. From the outset on the last end, it was apparent that there was nowhere that Killara could manoeuvre the jack to for 5 or 6 shots; with the pressure off, Jenny drew two lovely shots, to make certain of the win, 23 – 16.
