Open Fours Champions 2018: Sue Hamilton, Jenny Wallis, Marilyn Brenner and Jan Martin (Turramurra)
Congratulations to our Open Fours Champions for 2018. The semi-finals and finals were played at Asquith Bowling Club on Tuesday 29 May. The final saw Sue Hamilton’s team (Turramurra) take on Eleanor Swain’s team (Belrose), after each had convincingly defeated their Neutral Bay opponents in the semi finals. In the final, the Turramurra team continued the confident form they had displayed in previous rounds and were out to a lead of 17-1 after 9 ends. But as it got later into the afternoon, the pace went off the green and the Belrose players dug deep to claw their way into the game and had the score at 18-11 after the 15th end. The margin was narrowed further over the following few ends, keeping the Belrose hopes alive. Just as it looked as though darkness would prevent the match being finished, the lights on the adjacent sports field came on for football practice and cast enough light over the fence to faintly illuminate the green. So the players finished the 21 ends of play, with Turramurra eventually extending their lead to win 24-17.
